my final video and evaluation

Image
Cynical Fairytale I found this project quite enjoyable and found myself learning a lot throughout. I believe as a whole my final production came out good, however could use improvement. To begin this project I researched into different perspectives of music video theories (vernallis and goodwin). I believe my research on these two theorists was accurate, detailed and informative however if i was given the chance to improve I would add more examples to demonstrate their theories. I then did an analysis of 3 music videos showing some genre conventions, analysing the song and how the video linked to it. I think my analysis was detailed and had a good amount of depth, however to improve I would link in the two above theorists perspectives to add even more depth and perspective. I then scouted out potential locations and created a brief story board showing what I wished to create. As I couldn't find images of my locations anywhere and I didn't schedule for time to photograph the lo

My music video idea and inspirations (add detail)

Image
My idea is to use a mainly performance video style, I want to conduct this through showing a female playing the ukulele along to the song in a large variety of locations and have a select amount of shots showing a small narrative for example, when the lyrics say "even though flynn ryders out there i'd probably reject him" I want to show the protagonist rejecting the male character, where as further into the music, when she says "but i blew the only shot that I think I ever had" I want to show the protagonist trying to redeem herself to the male character but he rejects her. The reason I have chosen performance over narrative and conceptual is because in some cases, seeing the artist perform their piece is more powerful and effective than seeing a narrative and I wish to be able to successfully create this effect within my music video. I also feel like the repetition of the same action but within various locations shows that the artist feels like shes repeating

Shot list/location scouting

Location scouting: Due to the amount of visibly different shots I want, I ideally wish to film in three main locations with at least two different areas in each location I can film in. Nuneaton-Stockingford recreational park Pros: - There are 5 separate areas to film in - Really close to my house so can go home to change equipment incase of any accidents - Public area, free to film in Cons: - Often litter dotted about and can be dangerous due to glass - Often people in all areas potentially worth filming in - Can be dangerous place  I have decided to use this as one of my filming locations because it is a large open space, conviniently located and has a variety of feature that could be useful towards my video. Nuneaton-The dip Pros:  -3 separate areas to film - Conveniently located making equipment transporting easy - open so is well lit Cons: - ground is uneven in places making unstable for equipment - often get people on pit bikes through, making potentially dangerous for equipment

Song choice and initial research

Song choice- Why? The song I have chosen to create my music video for is a song called Cynical Fairytale by an indie-pop singer/songwriter called Egg. I have chosen this song for many reasons such as wanting to explore this genre of music and creating a music video with the genre conventions of indie-pop. I am hoping to film a performance based music video with a narrative message conveyed behind some of the shots.  target audience I will be conducting a short questionnaire to verify the demographics and psychographics I wish to target along with ascertain the video styles the audience would prefer. distribution method I am choosing to distribute my questionnaire on twitter and facebook on fan pages for egg and similar artists such as Dodie Clarke. This is to get mainly responses from the target audience. Questionnaire:  What Age Group are you in? 15 and Below 16-18 19-21 22-30 30 and Above What is your gender? Male Female Other When listening to artists such as Egg or Dodie Clarke,

Carol Vernallis - The kindest cut

Carol Vernallis' theory revolves around four different concepts, being narrative, diegesis, camera movement and framing and editing. Narrative Vernallis states that a music video is the visual response to a song and its lyrics and therefore the video should support the lyrical meaning along with the music. However, the artist should still remain consistently present. This is to allow the audience to feel closer to the artist, along with identify with the music, this in theory leads to the artist gaining support from new fans. Music videos can, but are not limited to being balanced between narrative and performance, the video can be mostly performance or narrative and still convey a strong meaning whilst appealing to the audience. Vernallis goes on to state that continuity isn't as important in music videos and the narratives may often feel fragmented or unfinished; this is because the focus of the audience should still be on the song and if the narrative followed all basic rul

Andrew Goodwin - Dancing in the distraction factory

In Andrew Goodwins book "dancing in the distraction factory", he presents a theory stating every music video consists of 8 main principles. These are; links between the music and the visual, links between the lyrics and the visual, displaying typical genre conventions, an array of intertextual references, thee notion of looking, voyeurism, record labels demands and the music video will be either narrative, concept, or performance based.  Links between music and visual Goodwin states that the music and the visuals of a song are interlinked; meaning that, for example, if you were to watch a music video to an upbeat fast paced song, you are likely to see visuals such as a dance sequence, this is to represent the style of the music to the audience. Links between lyrics and visual Goodwin goes on to suggest that music videos will either amplify, contradict or illustrate the lyrics of the video. For example, music videos such as use the misce en scene of the video such as props or l
