My Film

Gender Dysphoria   Evaluation This video was particularly challenging for me to make due to multiple reasons; The current circumstances (lockdown) made it impossible for me to use in person actors other than myself, so I had to improvise, being the sole actor and choosing to convey certain messages, such as not being accepted by peers, in different creative ways. I did this by sending out a message to as many people as I could with a brief script of things I wished for them to say and send an audio clip of to me. This proved very effective for me and I really liked the emphasis that it put on the theme of mental instability. However, to improve this and the audio of the video as a whole in the future, I would gather a larger variety of audio clips to use rather than using the same ones as much as I did to keep the viewer engaged.  To further improve, I would invest in a higher quality camera in the future as the video quality was not great and quite pixelated as a result of poor camera

My Film Plan

Jaques Lacan Key words/Phrases to focus attention on when filming: -Lack of fulfilment -Mirror My main idea My idea is to convey body dysphoria that is experienced by a transgender person. This links to Lacans theory because my characters fantasy of what they wish they could look like feels un-achievable, and due to this they will always feel a lack of fulfilment. I will be conveying this by starting with multiple different shots of the protagonist still looking feminine, wearing makeup and a dress, I will use a variety of shot types to convey their discomfort as the video continues. The protagonist will be shown distressed and taking their make up off, making their hair more "boyish" and changing into less feminine clothes. Even after this character has shown themselves attempting to appear more masculine, they will be shown to feel a lack of fulfilment through showing their maladaptive habits such as smoking and drinking. I will also show the stress of money that sufferin

Laura Mulveys Theory of the male gaze presented in Transformers

Image
Transformers: In this scene from transformers, Megan Fox is shown as the woman subject to the male gaze this is shown through a mix of the camera slow panning across her body and the way the male is looking lustfully at her. This is not relevant to the story line and if the male gaze wasn't present, she may have just had a look at the cars engine and left it at that. These kind of shot types are only used to exhibit the traditionally beautiful girls to objectify them and allow the male audience to find pleasure in viewing her as an errotic object. This proves that the male gaze theory still holds some truth nowadays.

Laura Mulvey

The Male Gaze Mulveys theory suggests that the vast majority of popular cinematic productions are shown through the male gaze. She argues that films are produced mainly by men to satisfy the scopophilia of men (the pleasure of looking), and whilst scopophilia is something all genders are guilty of, Mulvey argued popular cinematic productions are made by heterosexual males and as a result, women would be sexualised and objectified within these movies. Mulvey also suggests that this scopophilia is presented in two ways; the active male and the passive female. The male takes pleasure from looking at the traditionally "beautiful" female and fantasises about her as she takes on the function of an erotic object for both the character in the production and the spectator and so that they connote to be looked-at-ness. Men gain pleasure from being able to look at the female in front of them without being judged where as in the real world, if they were to stare at women it would be co

Sigmund Freud

What is psychoanalysis? Psychoanalysis is a mixture of psychological theories and methods and is used to bring subconscious thoughts ands experiences to the surface. Psychoanalysis holds its origin in the work and theories of Sigmund Freud. Psychoanalysis aims to show that we, as people, have unconscious emotions, desires and even memories and many therapeutic methods aim to allow these to become conscious.  What does Freud do with this? Freud founded the basics of psychoanalysis and came up with some of the most important theories even today. A large amount of these theories have, throughout the years have found themselves impacting film and television and society as a whole. Now in a large amount of TV and film Freuds theories are shown through actions and personality traits of characters, even when the product wasn't directly influenced by freuds theories, most media productions show representations of freuds theories, specifically Id, Ego and Superego.  Freud suggested that we

Freuds Theory within The Vampire Diaries

Image
Example of id ego and super ego: In this video of The vampire diaries, Id is presented by Damon Salvatore, a careless, selfish person fixated on fulfilling his own desires no matter the consequences. He is shown as the id as he forces Elena to drink his blood so as if she dies she comes back and he can see her still, despite the fact that he knows she does not wish to be a vampire and gave her no say in the matter. Stefan Salvatore is presented as the super ego, an empathetic, caring person, fixated on ensuring Elena is safe and still gets to live a "normal" life. He is shown as the super ego when he rushes in and stops Damon, reminding him of the ethical issues behind what he was doing. Elena is presented as the Ego, often unsure, and following a mix of Damon and Stefans advice throughout the show. She is presented as ego in this scene as whilst the two brothers fight for control she ultimately choses to remove Damon from the situation, acting as the ego (deciding on the b

The Hugger. Main idea The idea behind this video was a man who is obsessed with human touch, specifically hugs. Due to the unforseen circumstances of the pandemic, this man is no longer able to satisfy his itch for hugs, because of this he tries to find gratification from inanimate objects and images of the hugging. As the man never feels as though it is good enough he begins to descend into madness and choses to hug a stranger. But said stranger is extremely uncomfortable with this and shouts at him. This angers the man leading him to kidnap this person so as he has a permanent solution.  How will I shoot this? The vast majority of this video will be shot on a phone using a gimble but the opening shot will use a tripod and a camera to ensure stillness whilst the close up shot is filmed. Lowkey lighting will be the most used in this production to emphasise the dark undertones of the video.  The beginning of the video will be close ups of the mans face, fidgeting hands and foot tappin

Jaques Lacan

Lacans Theory Lacans theory begins with infancy; as an infant, we as humans are in a mirror stage but by the 1950's, Lacan no longer saw the mirror stage as a moment in the infants life, more as a representation of a permanent structure of subjectivity. The mirror stage is the persons identification with their own image, Lacan calls this the "ideal-I or ideal ego, forming an ideal self image of themselves in their head. Cinema may function as a mirror to the audience in the same way, forming an ideal self image rather than allowing us to focus on who we really are. Lacans psychoanalysis contains a three part system consisting of imaginary, symbolic and real- these put together are what forms a persons sense of self awareness. The imaginary is where the person creates fantasies of both themselves and the object of their desires. The symbolic is developed through our societies culture and language. Where as the real is mostly consistent of our senses.  Lacan suggests that we c
