Notes on French New wave Lesson

- New wave appeared in a sociological investigation (post war) -Breaking away from tyranny of narrative in favor of new film and sound language cahiers du cinema -A rejection of classical montage style  - A conviction that best films are a personal artistic expression and should bear a stamp of personal authorship  (e.g truffaut godard chabrol rivette rohmer) New wave will ALWAYS be unique and distinctive but usually take something from past wave Aesthetic -The auter director is also script writer -Director doesnt follow script -Shoots natural locations (often illegally) -Small crews -Director opts for direct sound (exists in that world) -Often uses natural lighting -Non professional actors -Directs famous actors in unusual manner -Aesthetic over narrative MOST NEW WAVES HAVE AT LEAST SOME OF THESE Flexibility -Erasing boundaries between professional and amateur cinema/fiction and doc -Creativity in filmmaking -Narrative unrestricted  -Low budget -Exploration of contemporary -Digressio

ISO

Image
Within photography, ISO is the sensitivity to light of the camera sensor. Whereas in camera film, ISO depends on the  films sensitivity to light. The use of a higher ISO (e.g 800) will enable the shot to be exposed. Where a lower ISO (e.g 100) will create an under-exposed shot. However, relying on ISO to expose your image can greatly change the quality of them, the higher the ISO the more grain is created. Noise in film can, however be positively used. Some horror production may use noise to create a hand held feel and more suspense. My Examples

Lighting equipment and setups that would be used for the following scenarios:

A small documentary where portability is paramount Lighting- For a documentary where portability is important, lighting equipment that uses batteries rather than wired equipment would be ideal. A good example of this is LED lights  LED panels would be good as the bigger the panel, the softer the light. However you would need a CRI of 90-95 or better so as to match correctly with skin tones. As portable documentaries often rely on natural lighting as well, a reflector would be useful to further the quality of the shots. The gold reflector creates warm, natural fills which are used for sunsets and portraits. Where as white produces a neutral coloured bounce light that is good for fill lighting. Silver increases highlights and increases contrasts this is ideal for product shots and black and white filming. Black is used to either block or subtract light and translucent may be used to diffuse light, this is ideal for creating a soft effect. Equipment- As portability is paramount, the mos

How and Why lighting affects camera techniques for moving image

Image
Lighting affects camera techniques in moving image in a dramatic way, the use of lighting can help to cover up unintended things that could've happened on set. Without correct lighting, any shots filmed would likely either be over exposed or under exposed. Low-key lighting is different from the usual 3 point set up by using only one source of light, this creates contrast; this is similar to hard lighting (also known a direct point) which creates a dramatic effect and casts more defined shadows this occurs when the lighting source is greatly smaller than the subject. These types of lighting can be good to create connotations of paranoia and fear. Soft lighting is created when the lighting source is bigger than the subject and is created with multiple light sources. This form of lighting creates lower contrast and less shadows, soft lighting often creates connotations of happiness. https://movingimageeducation.org/create-films/production/camera/lighting
